Anxiety — What Actually Helps
Anxiety is the world's most common mental disorder — the WHO estimates about 470 million people were living with an anxiety disorder in 2023. It is not weakness and it is not rare. And the important part: highly effective treatments exist. Here is what genuinely helps, and when to get more support.
What anxiety feels like
- In the body: racing heart, tight chest, fast breathing, sweating, shaky hands, upset stomach, trouble sleeping
- In the mind: constant worry, "what if" thoughts you can't switch off, trouble concentrating, feeling on edge, irritability
- In behaviour: avoiding situations, checking things repeatedly, seeking reassurance
1. Slow your breathing — the fastest lever
Breathe in for about 4 seconds, hold for 4, and breathe out slowly for 6. Do it for 2-3 minutes. A longer out-breath activates the body's calm response and slows a racing heart. This is the first thing to reach for when anxiety spikes.
2. Move your body
Anxiety is partly adrenaline with nowhere to go. A brisk 10-20 minute walk, cycling, or any activity you enjoy helps burn it off. Regular daytime movement also improves sleep and mood.
3. Cut back on caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant — it produces the exact physical feelings of anxiety (racing heart, jittery hands) and makes worry worse. If you are anxious, cutting caffeine, especially in the afternoon and evening, often helps noticeably.
4. Protect your sleep
Poor sleep and anxiety feed each other. Keep a fixed sleep and wake time, keep the room cool and dark, and put screens away before bed. One bad night makes the next day's anxiety much harder.
5. Limit doom-scrolling
Endless news and social media scrolling keeps the mind in threat mode. Set limits, mute what upsets you, and give your attention a break — especially before sleep.
6. For a panic attack — ground yourself
A panic attack feels terrifying but it is not dangerous and it passes, usually within 5-20 minutes. Slow your breathing, name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, and let it peak and fall instead of fighting it. Splash cool water on your face and sit somewhere safe.
When everyday anxiety becomes an anxiety disorder
Anxiety crosses into a disorder when it is excessive, hard to control, and causes real distress or stops you studying, working or living normally — often most days for 2 weeks or more. That is a medical condition, not a personality flaw.
Treatment works. The main options are talking therapy (such as cognitive behavioural therapy) and, depending on age and severity, medicines — decided by a physician or psychiatrist. The WHO notes that only about 1 in 4 people with an anxiety disorder currently receive treatment — so if you are struggling, you are not alone in finding it hard to get help, and it is worth pushing for it.
